DRIVING TEST standards get higher !

Until recently, from the introduction of the practical Driving Test in 1935, there have been few changes to help improve the standard of driving on our roads.

On April 1st 1991 the reverse parking manoeuvre was introduced which saw the first real change to the Driving Test for 56 years.

July 1996 saw the introduction of the separate Theory Test replacing the questions asked on the Highway Code at the end of the practical test.

The most radical changes to the practical Driving Test came into force May 4th 1999 after wide-ranging consultations with Minister for Roads, Lord Whitty.

Adding approximately seven minutes to the test now means that routes can include higher speed dual carriageway driving and rural single carriageway driving where conditions allow.

Other changes include :

More efficient testing of manoeuvres to allow more time for driving outside congested areas, including the use of the test centre's own car-park for reverse parking.

Failing a candidate when he or she commits more than 15 minor driving faults

Improved written feedback after the test

Random testing of the Emergency Stop

It is expected that the threshold of driving faults will be lowered, probably to 12 in the near future.

November 2002 saw the introduction of the Hazard Perception Test with the 'Show me, tell me' section being introduced in September 2003.

The cost of a weekday practical diriving test is now £48.50.
