The Theory Test was introduced in July 1996 replacing those Highway Code questions asked at the end of the practical Driving Test. The idea behind the Theory Test is to prepare the new driver with the responsibilities associated with owning and driving motor vehicles on our roads. As such, the type of question asked is not just restricted to understanding road signs and rules of the road but also includes topics such as hazard awareness, vulnerable road users, documentation, attitude and much more.
Since its introduction we have seen the pass mark increased from 26 out of 35 to 43 out of 50 (to be answered in 57 minutes). Questions are continuously updated to maintain pace with the ever changing driving requirements. On January 4th 2000 the conventional paper test was replaced with a very user friendly touch screen test. This new service allows candidates to get their results on the same day instead of having to wait for postal results.
The most recent change was on November 14th 2002 when the Hazard Perception Test was added to the existing Theory Test.
