To gain your full driving licence (car) the learner has to pass a series of both theory and practical tests. The driving theory test and hazard perception test are taken, and must be passed, at the same sitting. Once this has been done the practical driving test, including the 'show me tell me' section, can be arranged.
The Driving Theory Test
This is a timed computer based exam, consisting of 50 multiple choice, motoring based questions. The learner has 57 minutes in which to answer the questions, the pass mark is a minimum of 43 correct answers.
The Hazard Perception
This test is taken immediately after the driving theory test and consists of a series of 14 video clips. Each clip lasts for approximately 1 minute during which the learner has to identify various developing hazards. There are a total of 15 hazards to identify, each hazard has a maximum possible score of 5 points. The quicker the learner reacts to the hazard the higher the score achieved. The pass mark is a minimum of 44 points.
The Practical Driving Test
The practical driving test is usually taken in the driving instructor's car. The test lasts approximately 37 minutes and will include a variety of different roads, both in and out of town. The learner will be asked to do two manoeuvres of the examiner's choosing and additionally on 1 in 3 tests there will be an emergency stop exercise.
The 'Show Me, Tell Me' Test
This is conducted at the start of the practical driving test. The learner will be expected to demonstrate and/or explain how to do basic maintenance checks on their test vehicle.
