TRAILER TRAINING :
Another First

As you can see we have taken the initiative and purchased a number of trailers to enable us to provide the training needed.

Following the change in driver licensing rules in January 1997, it may be necessary for anybody who has passed a driving
test and who wishes to tow a trailer, to take an additional driving test. This test is known as Category B+E. Without this category
the entitlement to drive whilst towing a trailer is restricted to the following:
A 3.5 tonne vehicle with trailer up to 750kg
A category B vehicle with trailer exceeding 750kg provided that;
(i) the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes and
(ii) the Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the vehicle and the towing vehicle has no more
than 8 passenger seats
Some examples of combinations which would be likely to exceed these allowances and therefore require a test to be
taken are
vehicle + horsebox
vehicle + plant / equipment trailer
vehicle + car transport or boat trailer
As you can see, we have taken the initiative and purchased a number of trailers to enable us to provide the training needed to pass the B+E
Category test.
The B+E Category test lasts for approximately an hour and costs
£115. The examiner looks for a very high standard of driving, and
will carry out a number of pre-set manoeuvres including reversing,
coupling and uncoupling, along with a number of vehicle and
trailer safety checks.
